Date : August, 1987
Location: Tashikuergan in the Pamir Mountains
Story   : A Spot of Red upon the Green
I regretted embarking upon such a journey soon after I set out.  From Kashi to the Pamirs, the elevation was high and there were no roads.  I had to cross the so-called “Father of Glaciers”, at an elevation of 7,300 metres––the Mushitage and Gonggeerjiubie Peaks, at an elevation of 7,500 metres, before reaching Tashikuergan City.
This was the capital of Tajike.  By the time I arrived at the town, it was already late at night, and the surrounding was completely dark.  I stayed in a small hostel, and looked forward to the next morning.  At dawn, I opened my eyes and saw from afar remnants of an old castle.  I took a deep breath and ran towards it.  Looking down from the old castle, not even in my dreams was there such a vast prairie on the highlands of a glacier.
An even more spectacular scene came into view.  I could see some tiny red spots, jumping and leaping; twinkling and glistening on the vast green plane.  They were the clansmen of Tajike.  All the women and girls wore gauze, from head to toe.  Stretched before my eyes was an azure sky; a magnificent colour combination of green, red, blue and white, decorating the never ending snow-capped mountains.  I was so profoundly touched that my eyes were brimming with tears.  At that moment, all the hardship of my journey seemed worthwhile!
Behind me was an old castle, which marked the famous old stone town with a legacy of two thousand years.  It was once on the route of the Silk Road, at a junction of the middle and southern routes.  Travellers of ancient times such as Marco Polo had left their tracks there.  Architecturally, it was ranked as one of China’s three major stone cities, and also the most well-preserved of the four ancient stone cities worldwide.
I painted in the mountains from dawn to dusk for over ten days without taking a break. After completing a series of sketches on oil paintings, I made my way down the mountain.  Due to the language barrier, I had not made close contact or had any interchange with the local people.  There, I captured the sheer physical beauty of the people and place, a simple record of colours, inclined to be superficial rather than being something that I am emotionally attached to.
It's been two years after i said goodbye to this expidition.
