Story : Seeking ‘Blue’ and ‘Green Eyes’
The two girls, one with blue eyes, and the other with green eyes, both had their own names. However, I prefer to call them ‘Blue Eyes’ and ‘Green Eyes’.
I had been looking for the girls for some time, and finally reached their house. When I pushed open the tiny wooden door, there was a small courtyard within that emitted a bad smell, probably from the filthy water that had not been drained for years. The house was not lit, apparently occupied only by a woman who was seriously ill. Inside, there were more puddles. Apart from the candle on the windowsill, the only things that could be seen were a few pieces of clothing hanging inside a plastic bag. The sick woman was sitting next to a stove. Her scarlet eyes were unable to open, but with tears streaming down her cheeks.
The two girls, ‘Blue’ and ‘Green Eyes’, immediately came out of the room and embraced me lovingly. I pretended to look for my camera, so that they would not see my tears. Quick as a wink, they jumped over to the plastic bag and took out new scarves, replacing the old ones that they were wearing. They led me to the courtyard and began to pose in front of the camera. Their mother leaned against the door gazing at us, her eyes swollen with tears.
I was too absorbed in my photo-taking that I had completely forgotten about the gifts. I gave the candies to ‘Blue’ and ‘Green Eyes’. They held them tightly and were reluctant to put them down. They could not pose while holding the candies and so I tried to put them in their pockets. However, their clothes were ragged and shabby, I therefore tied the candies onto their skirts.
‘Blue’ and ‘Green Eyes’ put the candies into their mouths, gripping them in their teeth to prevent them from melting. They did not want to finish them at once.
An elderly man in his eighties came over. Sitting under a tree, he held the girls in his arms and allowed me to take photos freely.
When I revisited the mountain the next year, I learned that the old man had passed away. The villagers told me that he was the grandfather of ‘Blue’ and ‘Green Eyes’.
